Relics are items that grant effects to your cards that aren’t naturally present. What sets Cross Blitz apart from the card games it cribs from is equipping relics. I’m often kept on my toes, having to calculate the potential outcomes of combat and figure out where to place new units for more beneficial outcomes later in the match. I love the strategy in card placement on both defense and offense. Minions, the footsoldiers in these cardboard skirmishes, can be placed in any of the two rows of four open spaces on your side of the board and will attack left to right, front to back, in the column they inhabit. Every card has a mana cost needed to cast it, and each subsequent turn grants one additional mana, starting with one and increasing up to ten. One-on-one matches are battled between two people, with each side controlling eight spaces for playable permanent cards on the board.

Cross Blitz games play the same way regardless of which mode you choose. Its mechanics are familiar to those who have played games like Hearthstone, Magic: The Gathering, and Yu-Gi-Oh, sometimes mixing elements of the three to great effect. I’ve had the chance to shuffle through the ambitious card game, and while there are many cards and features to be added and improved upon, this pirate adventure is worth setting sail with from the get-go.Īs a card game enthusiast (read: sicko), I latched onto Cross Blitz immediately.
